The Mindful Lens

Mindful photography courses for people who want to slow down and pay better attention to their lives.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment, on purpose and without judgement.

That is it. No special equipment, no particular belief system, no requirement to sit cross legged on a cushion for an hour. Just the simple, radical act of being here, in this moment, rather than somewhere else in your head.

Dr Tamara Russell describes mindfulness as supercharged awareness. I love that. Because it captures something that more formal definitions sometimes miss.

Mindfulness is not passive or quiet or detached. It is an active, deliberate turning toward your own experience. A choosing to be present in the life you are already living.

Research consistently shows that a regular mindfulness practice reduces stress, improves focus, increases resilience and supports overall wellbeing. But the reason most people keep coming back to it is simpler than any of that.

It makes ordinary life feel more like a life worth living.

What is mindful photography?

Mindful photography is the practice of using a phone or camera as a tool for presence rather than performance.

It is not about taking beautiful photographs, though sometimes that happens. It is about what happens in the moment before you take the photograph. The stopping. The looking. The deliberate act of giving your full attention to something small and ordinary and easily overlooked.

In that moment, something shifts. The mental noise quiets. The to-do list recedes. You are simply here, looking at this thing, in this light, on this ordinary day.

That is mindful photography. And it turns out that a phone or camera is one of the most effective mindfulness tools available, because it gives you something that sitting meditation sometimes does not. A reason to stop. Permission, in a world that never stops moving, to simply stand still and pay attention.

You do not need to be a photographer. You do not need to know anything about cameras or composition or editing. You just need to be willing to look.

If you have read this far and something feels right, trust that. It usually knows before you do.

Robyn - The Quiet Photographer

Three courses. One gentle journey.

The Mindful Lens is a series of three self-paced mindful photography courses. Each one builds gently on the last, though all three can be taken independently. Together they form a complete journey from first noticing to deep practice.

SEED A beginner's course in mindful photography

This is where it begins.

Five online modules that introduce you to the practice of slow, intentional looking and what it does to your attention, your wellbeing and your relationship with the ordinary world. SEED asks nothing more of you than a willingness to stop, look and be gentle with yourself along the way.

This course is for anyone who feels the pull toward stillness and doesn't quite know how to find it. No experience needed. No right or wrong way to do this.

Available now, enrol anytime.

What People Are Saying

ROOT Going deeper in mindful photography

The practice takes root.

Five online modules that move from the objects in your home to the landscapes that restore you, from the turning of the seasons to the quiet autobiography your images have been writing all along. ROOT asks you to stay a little longer, go a little deeper, and begin to trust what the practice is showing you about yourself.

This course is for anyone who has completed SEED and feels ready to go further. Or for anyone who already knows how to slow down and is beginning to ask what the slowing down is showing them.

Coming Autumn 2026.

A gentle note

The Mindful Lens is a mindful photography practice and a course in presence. It is not a therapeutic programme and it is not a substitute for professional mental health support.

Many people find that slowing down, spending time in nature and practising mindful attention has a genuinely positive effect on their wellbeing, and the science supports that. But if you are currently experiencing significant mental health difficulties, please do prioritise reaching out to a qualified professional.

If you need support, the Samaritans are available 24 hours a day on 116 123, or visit mind.org.uk for mental health resources.
