In-home Newborn Photography in Bury St Edmunds: What to Expect

There’s something deeply comforting about staying home in those first few weeks. No wrestling with car seats, no packing a bag that tries to predict every possible need, no rushing out the door before the next feed. Just your own space, your own rhythm, your own light falling exactly where it always does.

That’s the heart of in-home newborn photography. If you’re in Bury St Edmunds and wondering what actually happens during a session, here’s a gentle walk through the process, from booking to the moment your gallery arrives.

Why in-home instead of a studio?

Studios have their place, but they’re not your place. They come with someone else’s blankets, someone else’s backdrop and a car journey your newborn may or may not approve of.

At home, everything is already familiar. Your baby is surrounded by the things they know, and you don’t have to think quite so much about logistics. You can simply settle into the space where your story is already unfolding.

And that’s what makes the photographs feel true. The blanket draped over the sofa, the way the nursery light falls at 10am, the everyday objects that quietly anchor your life. In a few years, those details may mean more than any perfectly styled setting ever could.

Before the session

I’ll check in about a week beforehand to talk through timing. Newborn sessions work best when there’s room to follow your baby’s natural rhythm, so we’ll choose a time that usually sits well with feeds and sleep.

There’s very little you need to do. Clearing a surface or two can help, but I’m not arriving to photograph a show home. I’m arriving to photograph you in the place where these first days are happening.

If you already know where the loveliest light tends to fall, feel free to mention it. Otherwise, just be as you are.

During the session

Newborn sessions are intentionally slow and unhurried. We pause for feeds, cuddles and settling, or simply for whatever your baby needs. There’s no need to force anything. We let your baby set the pace and allow the photographs to unfold around you.

Most sessions last around an hour, sometimes a little longer if your baby needs extra time. I move quietly, working around whatever is naturally happening.

Tiny stretches. Soft yawns. Curled toes. The way your hands look impossibly protective beside theirs.

Those are the moments I’m watching for.

After the session

Once your images are edited, you’ll receive a private online gallery to explore in your own time. From there, you can choose your favourites and I’ll prepare your final set, ready to keep, print or turn into something you’ll want to see every day.

A few quick questions

How long does a newborn session take?
Around an hour to 90 minutes, with plenty of flexibility for feeds, cuddles and settling.

What’s the best age for newborn photographs?
The first few weeks can be a beautiful time to photograph your baby, but there isn’t a single perfect moment. Every baby and every family has their own rhythm, and that’s completely okay.

Do I need to tidy the whole house?
No. A couple of clear spots is more than enough. I’m there for you, not your home.

Can my other children or partner be part of the session?
Absolutely. Your newborn has arrived into a family, and the relationships around them are part of their story too.

If you’re expecting soon, or you’re already home with your newborn and wanting to remember these early days, in-home newborn sessions are available throughout the year, whatever the weather is doing outside.

You can find more details on my newborn photography page, or simply get in touch if there’s anything you’d like to ask.

Warmly,
Robyn
